Profiles of IJALS Staff

Associate Professor Mere Pulea

Appointed Director 1997. Formerly Senior Lecturer, School of Law at U.S.P.

Mere was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales in 1975 and the Fiji Bar in 1976. She was appointed Commissioner for Oaths of the High Court of Fiji in March 1992. In 1975 Mere became Director of Social Development and Welfare within the Fiji Government. She has been a Research Fellow in the Institute of Pacific Studies at USP and in 1981 Mere was appointed Special assistant to the Vice Chancellor. Mere continued to maintain her link with USP when she became Foundation Director of the USP Centre in Nauru and taught law at both the Nauru and Kiribati Centres. Mere joined the Pacific Law Unit in Port Vila in 1993. Mere has worked as a legal consultant for various regional and international organisations and has provided legal assistance on a range of matters to various regional governments in the Pacific. She has published in the fields of family and environmental law.

Ian Langford

Legal Practice Fellow

Ian Langford takes up his position in October 1997. He is the Deputy Director of the Legal Training Institute in Papua New Guinea and is well versed in the study and practice of law in the region.

Oyiela Litaba

Legal Practice Fellow

Oyiela Litaba from the University of Sheffield, UK took up her appointment as Legal Practice Fellow in August 1997. She has helped to design and establish a legal practice course in UK where she specialised in civil litigation and advocacy skills.

Caren Wickliffe

Human Rights Fellow

Caren Wickliffe took up her position as Human Rights Education Fellow in July 1997. She has extensive human rights experience at university, governmental and NGO levels in New Zealand, and has worked on human rights issues with native Americans in the USA. She is currently working on the Disability research project which is jointly sponsored by IJALS and the Fiji Disabled People’s Association.
